The NZEA releases First Nations Action Plan
One of the responsibilities of the Net Zero Economy Authority (NZEA) is to support First Nations people to participate in, and benefit from, Australia’s transition to a net zero emissions economy.
Our First Nations Action Plan (the Action Plan) provides the framework of how we will deliver on this responsibility. Read the Action Plan to learn more about what this will look like in practice.
Why a First Nations Action Plan
The Action Plan was developed in partnership with First Nations community-controlled representatives. Stakeholders consulted in the development of the Action Plan acknowledged the importance of setting a clear direction for how NZEA will not only engage with, but support, First Nations communities.
The plan will guide how we support First Nations people to take part in, and benefit from, Australia’s transition to net zero in our priority regions. Each region has unique challenges and opportunities. Our place-based approach seeks to honour the leadership of First Nations organisations at the forefront of the energy transition across Australia, in the regions that are most affected.
What this will look like
The Action Plan outlines how we will:
- build on work already underway, not duplicate it
- include First Nations rights and interests in all our policies, programs and projects
- be guided by the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples and the National Agreement on Closing the Gap.
We are working with First Nations people to support First Nations:
- businesses, community organisations and community members to be active in the transition in our priority regions
- people to be direct beneficiaries of new and expanding industries and partners in economic, social, environmental and cultural activities
- communities to continue to manage their Country.
Next steps
With the launch of the Action Plan, we will continue to work with First Nations people in our priority regions to identify benefits and progress projects and priorities of importance to First Nations communities.
