About Latrobe-Gippsland
For more than a century, the Latrobe-Gippsland region has been a powerhouse for Victoria and generated electricity to the National Electricity Market.
Whilst the building and operation of power stations and associated coal mines are a source of pride for the people of the Latrobe-Gippsland region, the region offers a range of economic opportunities for the community, including in new energy and energy transition services, health services, agriculture and tourism.

New industries and projects
The transition in the Latrobe-Gippsland region is supported by significant renewable generation and storage solutions, including both planned and ongoing initiatives. Among these are the Delburn Wind Farm and the Latrobe Valley Battery Energy Storage System.
Solar
Developing solar power generation in the Latrobe-Gippsland region is an important step in moving towards a renewable energy future. It also helps the region transition to a cleaner economy. The region is home to a number of solar farms and solar proposals. This marks a significant investment in the region’s renewable energy infrastructure.
Education and research
The NZEA engaged Oxford Economics Australia (OEA) to understand potential opportunities and transition pathways over the next 25 years in three of our priority regions; Central Queensland, the Hunter and the Latrobe Valley.

Regional Plans
The Latrobe-Gippsland region will see a number of coal-fired power stations and mines close over the coming decades. The Australian Government aims to make sure workers and communities are supported when major facilities close to make sure downside impacts are minimised.
The Authority is supporting the Department of Employment and Workplace Relations to develop Regional Workforce Transition Plans. These plans will provide transition supports to workers, their families and communities that are significantly impacted by facility closures.
In the lead up to a power station closing in a region, we will also undertake an assessment process. The assessment will determine if extra support is needed for power station workers under the Energy Industry Jobs Plan.
Regional Workforce Transition Plans
Regional Workforce Transition Plans will help coordinate employment and skills supports to enable regions to manage the impact of closures while maximising the benefits of the transition.
Energy Industry Jobs Plan
The Energy Industry Jobs Plan (the EIJP) provides support directly to workers to prepare for and transition into a new job when eligible coal-fired or gas-fired power stations close.

Training support
The Victorian Government has established a $50 million TAFE Clean Energy Fund to fund clean economy projects in regional Victoria. This includes investments in new and upgraded facilities, such as Stage 2 of the Asia Pacific Renewable Energy Training Centre at Federation TAFE, a clean energy centre at TAFE Gippsland’s Morwell Campus, and a Building Innovation and Design Centre at South West TAFE.
