From the west coast to the east: Duratec is investing in the Hunter
The Hunter’s industrial expertise is essential to its future identity as the region’s economy changes. Duratec is building on that expertise by investing in local businesses, people, and the industrial capabilities to support established industries and emerging opportunities.
Who is Duratec?
Founded in Western Australia in 2010, Duratec is an Australian engineering, construction and remediation contractor. It’s been operating in NSW for close to a decade.
Duratec plays a vital role in supporting Australia’s energy sector, extending the operational life of the infrastructure that powers the state’s industries, businesses and communities. Today, the company is expanding its contribution to the energy transition landscape by supporting renewable energy projects and continuing investment in the Hunter.
Duratec’s work in the region
The Hunter is one of Australia’s most significant industrial, energy and infrastructure hubs. Duratec is strengthening its presence in the area through strategic and deliberate investments. These include establishing a local workforce, acquiring Hunter-based businesses, and participating in major energy projects.
Establishing a local workforce
Duratec has established a dedicated office in Newcastle, building a locally-based workforce to support its operations. The Newcastle office delivers engineering, remediation, asset protection and construction services to local clients, ensuring responsive and regionally focused project delivery. The company is actively recruiting project managers, site managers and support personnel. This demonstrates a clear long-term commitment to the Hunter region, rather than relying on remote servicing arrangements.
As Australia's largest regional economy, the Hunter is home to significant mining, energy, manufacturing, port and defence industries. Duratec's strong local presence positions the company to better support clients and respond to opportunities across these key sectors.
Expanding with Hunter-based businesses
In 2026, Duratec expanded its operations in the Hunter region by buying 2 local businesses. One was Pacific Welding Australia (PWA), a Newcastle-based company that provides welding and metal fabrication services and employs around 60 people. The other was Hunter Coatings, a specialist contractor providing industrial painting and protective coating services.
These acquisitions gave Duratec access to established relationships with major energy, mining and industrial clients. These relationships enabled the company to grow its service offerings on Australia’s east coast with local businesses and individuals. This strengthened regional supply chains and delivering lasting economic benefits in the Hunter.
Participation in major energy and industrial projects
The Hunter region is central to Australia's hydrogen, renewable energy and industrial decarbonisation programs. Duratec's involvement in energy infrastructure projects is supporting the region’s transformation.
This includes work at the 260MW Glenellen Solar Farm in New South Wales. At the solar farm, Duratec (via its 100% owned subsidiary EIG) designed, manufactured, tested and supplied power conversion unit (PCU) cabinets that deliver renewable energy safely and reliably.
Importance of supporting a strong and sustainable future for the Hunter
The Hunter region's energy transition presents a significant opportunity for businesses like Duratec to contribute to the region's long-term prosperity. By investing in local people, projects and capability development, companies can help retain valuable expertise within the region, create new employment pathways and support a smooth transition as the Hunter economy adapts to future opportunities.
