Shaping Latrobe’s future economy and future generations
More than 100 ideas for Latrobe and the broader Gippsland region’s future were generated when the Net Zero Economy Authority (NZEA) brought together industry, community and government representatives for 2 workshops in Morwell on 27 and 28 May.
The sessions built on earlier workshops held in October and November 2025. The workshops are part of NZEA’s ongoing commitment to working alongside local leaders, organisations and stakeholders. They aim to help shape a strong and sustainable future for the region.
Participants identified a range of opportunities and practical actions to support new investment, grow local industries and create quality jobs as Latrobe-Gippsland continues its transition to a net zero economy.
Unlocking new opportunities for growth
Several industries were highlighted as having significant potential for future growth, including:
- new energy supply chain
- bioenergy
- advanced manufacturing and defence
- food and fibre value-add
- resources
- transport and logistics
- data centres.
A strong message from the workshops was that Latrobe-Gippsland is well-positioned to attract new investment and become a leading destination for emerging industries. Participants emphasised the importance of coordinated investment attraction efforts and creating the conditions that give investors confidence to back major projects in the region.
Supporting workers through transition
The workshops also reinforced the value of the region’s skilled workforce. As industries evolve, there is a significant opportunity for workers with experience in the coal sector to apply their expertise in new and expanding industries. Participants highlighted the importance of creating clear workforce pathways and providing the right support for both workers and employers. This makes sure the benefits of transition are shared across the community.
Collaboration for a stronger future
NZEA’s Future Economy Network and Future Generations Network will continue to play a key role in bringing people together to help guide the region’s transformation. The networks provide an inclusive and transparent forum where stakeholders can collaborate on the region’s future. Among others, these stakeholders include:
- government
- industry
- community and advocacy groups
- Traditional Owners
- unions
- education providers.
Meeting 3 times each year, the networks will focus on identifying new opportunities for industry growth and investment while supporting the social and economic foundations needed for a thriving, resilient and prosperous Latrobe-Gippsland.
Together, these conversations are helping to build momentum for a future economy that creates opportunities for workers, businesses and future generations across the region.
