In regions such as the Hunter and Central Coast, energy systems are expanding and shifting to renewable sources. This opens up new opportunities for businesses specialising in transmission infrastructure.

To explore these opportunities, NZEA engaged the Industry Capability Network (ICN) to research industry capability in the Hunter and Central Coast regions. ICN also explored how to maximise business participation in transmission development.

The research focused on:

  • planning and site preparation for transmission projects
  • manufacturing, installation and ongoing maintenance of transmission towers
  • manufacturing, installation and ongoing maintenance of electrical balance of plant, including cabling, wiring,
    substations and transformers.

ICN found Hunter and Central Coast businesses have strong capability and transferable expertise in heavy fabrication, precision machining, and industrial metal processing, with local transmission projects worth over $1 billion over the next three to four years.
